Pharmaceuticals are gone. What do you do?
Welcome to an un-medicated America in this dystopian, literary thriller.
After a series of devastating terrorist attacks deprives America of the pharmaceuticals on which it depends, Aberdeen Childress fights to keep her family and an apartment building full of lost souls sane and safe in a city run by agents of the very drug cartel responsible for the attacks.
As the military moves in to stop the chaos, private companies deal with those off their medications and fraudulent faith healers promise deliverance, Aberdeen is forced to deal with the city's tormentors to fulfill her needs, and the needs of the people she loves. In this dystopian America, she must decide if she'll become a heroine and overcome her enemies or give in to the allure of a fraying society and fulfilled desires.
Faced with an uncertain future and hindered by her own failing lungs, Aberdeen struggles to maintain balance, to save lives, and to survive in a world where salvation and destruction are intimately linked to chemicals.
Interview with the Author
Q - What can readers expect from this book?
A - Chemicals is a dark read confronting our dependency on drugs and America's war on drugs. It takes a creative look at a scenario where we are left without an escape via chemicals from all our problems, both physical and mental. If you have ever feared the outcome of terrorism or the impact of drug cartels on society, this will keep you fascinated. But it's a great dystopian/post apocalyptic read as well with some science fiction flair. Fans of psychological suspense and a strong female protagonist will be pleased as well.
Q - Is this book standalone or will it be part of a series?
A - Originally written as a standalone, I'm in the works of writing a sequel. I think the entire series will be three books long and I look forward to going deeper into an America without ready access to legal drugs and what that might look like for my characters.
Q - Why is Chemicals important to readers?
A - Whether we like it or not, most of us have addictions or dependencies on modern drugs, illicit or legal. I wouldn't be alive today without my asthma inhalers. It's scary to consider a scenario where we are cut off from the drugs most of us need in order to lead our lives in health and happiness. I have yet to run across an American that doesn't need pharmaceuticals; it affects all our lives so much. How horrible would it be if that blessing was disturbed by some terrorist, drug cartel act?

I generally juggle two or three titles from my reading list at any given time. That was not possible with Chemicals; this novel demanded my full attention. This novel reminded me how much I hate that stories must have endings. Especially great stories. Especially stories filled with rich and vivid characters such as those created by Erica Crockett. I missed them immediately, even the evil ones. I wanted to keep reading.Chemicals is certainly a deftly articulated social commentary that is hauntingly prophetic. But I was impressed with the writing itself. I am a fan of writing as a craft. I am sometimes insanely jealous of great writing. The latter applied for Chemicals. I was captivated by the narrative. It’s one thing to create some complex characters and tell a great story. It’s far more difficult to do that using a third person, attached narrator in the present tense. Erica overcame the restrictions of that single point of view by delivering evocative dialogue, careful plotting, and a strategic use of time to develop the characters and move the story. The immediacy was powerful and effective. A writerly triumph indeed. Chemicals was also filled with sentences I wish I had written. To list a few…
• “She instead dreams of sinking into the moon of romance, made of cotton and love and throbbing with bioluminescence."
• "Everything will be all right when we come back from where we all have been."
• "Strangeness is all over you, Aberdeen."
• "It could be that the word evil is just too wedded to the word genius in my mind."
But above all, I enjoyed the subtle moments this story provided. A simple note from Louis to Aberdeen was my personal favorite. This moment was earned in pieces—a careful crescendo—and provided an emotional punch to punctuate the bond between the two. Similarly, the novel was full of tiny, exquisite mysteries that held my attention long after the words were read. Even now, I catch myself pondering about Sani and formulating theories on how Hurt knew Walter’s name.
Bottom line: Chemicals is a great story. Erica Crockett is a gifted writer. Highly recommended.

Chemicals Erica Crockett 9781942300014 Books Reviews
For most of us, we are blessed to live our lives filled with opportunity, we are given plenty of choices, and we are provided with an abundance of everything. Erica Crockett takes you on a journey through an amazing and uncomfortable possibility, where things that we take for granted every single day, like a bottle of hydrogen peroxide, is no longer available. Our choices are limited. Our opportunities are few and far between and abundance, is a distant memory. Her description and use of words is creative and mesmerizing. I could feel the main character Aberdeen's anxiety, I could feel the effort in her breaths, her courage and willingness to stay strong. This is a great read where her characters show the depth and strength of the human heart and spirit when put to the test. Ms. Crockett is a very passionate author and I look forward to her next release!
A powerful drug cartel has cut off the supply of pharmaceuticals and it takes only a number of days for society to begin breaking apart. As the cartel seeks to create a populace of addicts, the government resorts to martial law, rounding up trouble makers and packing them off the mysterious 'camps' never to be seen again. Follow Aberdeen Childress as she navigates this newly chaotic world. At times she plays the role of the victim, the bystander, the mother, the warrior, and the junkie. Will she make it through this turmoil without losing herself? Can she bring her loved ones with her? Chemicals is an engrossing and suspenseful read you won't want to put down.
The first thing I did when I finished reading 'Chemicals' was catch my breath...the second thing I did was go to my fridge and stare lovingly at my prescription bottles. Not that I take many pills but the stuff I do take makes life much easier to deal with. You see, in the world Erica Crockett created in 'Chemicals', terrorists have taken away America's pharmaceuticals in a particularly clever and devastating plot to bring the country to it's knees. Needless to say, it worked!
But before you go thinking this is some popcorn summer action adventure drivel about soldiers fighting terrorists to get our beloved drugs back, sit back and thank your maker that Mrs. Crockett is in charge here. 'Chemicals' takes the high road and tells a heady, character driven tale set is this bleak, dystopian world. We'll mostly follow Aberdeen as she trudges her way through everyday life in this new, uncertain world. She's a tough female lead which is refreshing to see. We watch her develop in surprising ways throughout the book and it's consistently pleasurable to be attached to her point of view.
The real joy of this book is that every time I tried to guess where it was going, it would take a left where my brain would take a right. In other words, it keeps you on your toes which I know from writing experience is NOT EASY to do. There were some truly touching, truly frightening moments that make it difficult to put the book down. It's hard to believe that this is a debut novel as everything about it screams professional.
A highly addictive and highly recommended read!
